Tangled Up in Jazz

5 03 2010

My rapt compassion wrapped
In trigonometry perspective sports
Zapped gaseous frying-pan bath
I’ll sweat grease for a good cause.

Haltered by constant hyperbole
I bite the bitter stem of criticism
A torment on my vapor trails
In an atmosphere frothy with wind.

And when you try to bend the air
You are an immediate suspect
So keep your poetry in the closet
Like a bad habit ashamed.

There is a beast named what you will
And what you won’t and what you might
His green green eyes throw a terrible fright
So we gobble down the bitter pill

We tip the waiter and pay the bill
We smile and nod and are polite
We work by day and sleep by night
For what you will and what you won’t
And what you might.

Jazz works in mysterious ways like
Vines gone kudzu crazy with sperm
Germination and compassion rapt
Wrapped in
What you will
And what you won’t
And what you might.
